A family-sized adobe vacation house in Borrego Springs with a fully fenced yard and pool

Family Getaway

The SoCal family weekend, done right.

Two hours from San Diego. Two and a half from LA. A small desert town with the darkest sky in Southern California, the easiest hikes, and a private house big enough for the whole family.

Why Borrego Springs works for families

Borrego Springs is what San Diego families wish Palm Springs still was. No stoplights. No crowds. No noise. Two hours from home. And the kind of desert that's accessible — palm oases, slot canyons, drivable overlooks, life-size metal dinosaurs in the open valley.

The night sky alone is worth the trip. Most kids have never actually seen the Milky Way. Here they will, from the backyard.

The weekend itinerary (Friday → Sunday)

Friday evening. Leave San Diego after lunch. Roll into Borrego by 6pm. Swim, hot tub, dinner at home, head to the rooftop deck after dark.

Saturday morning. Borrego Palm Canyon hike (3 miles round-trip, mostly flat sandy wash, ends at a hidden palm grove). Back to the pool by 11am.

Saturday afternoon. The Galleta Meadows sky-art scavenger hunt — print our map, count the dinosaurs, find the 350-foot serpent that crosses the road. Free, drivable, kids run the show.

Saturday evening. Sunset at Font's Point. Stars and s'mores at the firepit.

Sunday morning. The Slot — a narrow mudstone canyon walk, 2 miles. Best photos of the trip. Home by 3pm.

The house we built for it

Moonlight Oasis is a 3-bedroom architectural house that sleeps up to 13 — six adults across three master bedrooms, plus trundles and the library daybed. Fully fenced yard. Pool. Hot tub. 6-burner range. Library lounge with board games. Rooftop stargazing deck with a real telescope.

No noise from the street, no city light bleed through the windows, no "quiet hours by 10pm" because the next house is a quarter mile away.

Practical notes for parents

  • Pack layers. November–March nights drop into the 40s.
  • Bring a red-light headlamp per kid for stargazing — keeps their night vision intact.
  • Cell signal drops outside town. Download Google Maps offline.
  • The closest grocery is in town (Center Market). Stock up in San Diego if you want anything specific.
  • Kids 4+ can handle Palm Canyon and The Slot. Strollers don't work on either.
