Moonlight Oasis dining room in Borrego Springs

Eat

Where to eat.

Borrego is a small town. The food scene is short but real — these are the places we send guests to, in the order we'd send them.

Breakfast

Kendall's Cafe. A no-frills diner on Christmas Circle. Pancakes, huevos rancheros, bottomless coffee.

Carmelita's. Mexican breakfast plates — chilaquiles, machaca con huevos, fresh flour tortillas.

Lunch & quick

Los Jilberto's Taco Shop. The local San Diego–style taco shop. California burrito, carne asada fries, open late.

Center Market. Sandwiches and groceries, useful if you're loading up before a hike.

Dinner

Carlee's. The Borrego classic — steak, prime rib, full bar, vinyl booths.

Red Ocotillo at the Inn. The closest thing to a date-night restaurant in town. Patio under string lights.

Coyote Steakhouse. Upscale steakhouse (formerly Krazy Coyote) at the Palms at Indian Head, with a view of the mountains.

Butterfield Dining Room at La Casa del Zorro. The fanciest table in town — white-tablecloth dinner at the historic desert resort.

Sweet & coffee

Coyote Steve's Coffee. Espresso, cold brew, breakfast burritos — the locals' morning stop.

Center Market dates & date shake. The local agricultural product. Get a date shake at least once.
